Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Since September 29, 2016, foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries (such as Japan), excluding U.S. citizens, must obtain an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) when entering Canada by air. This is an electronic travel authorization required for individuals staying in Canada for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
Key Features of eTA
- An eTA is valid for a maximum of five years. However, if your passport expires, the eTA will become invalid accordingly.
- The application fee is 7 CAD, and payment can be made by credit or debit card.
- The eTA can be obtained through a simple online process; however, the application must be completed in English or French.
eTA requirements vary depending on your method of travel to Canada and your nationality.
Quick Comparison: eTA vs. Visitor Status
Many people mistake an eTA for a permit that allows them to stay in Canada as a tourist. However, an eTA is a pre-travel authorization to board a flight to Canada, while the actual “Visitor Status” (permission to stay) is granted by a border services officer upon arrival. Both are essential components for traveling to and staying in Canada.
| Category | eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) | Visitor Status (Stay as a Tourist) |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Authorizes travel to Canada | Permits staying in Canada |
| Timing | Applied for online before travel | Granted by an officer at the port of entry |
| Validity | Up to 5 years (linked to passport expiry) | Usually up to 6 months from the date of entry |
| Purpose | Required as part of travel procedures | Authorizes legal residence during the stay |
| Important Note | Does not guarantee entry into Canada | Must apply for an extension to stay longer |
【Important Note】
- Most visitors can stay in Canada for up to six months. Even if you are allowed entry, a border services officer may authorize a stay for less than or more than six months. In such cases, the date by which you must leave Canada will be indicated in your passport.
Traveler Categories and eTA Requirements
Travelers who need an eTA
Travelers from visa-exempt countries (e.g., Japan) need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. However, an eTA is not required if arriving in Canada by land (car, bus, or train) or by sea (such as a cruise ship).
Certain travelers from visa-required countries
Some travelers from visa-required countries (those who typically need a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) may be eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a TRV. This applies only to travel by air; a TRV is still required when entering by land or sea.
Travelers who do not need an eTA
- Canadian citizens or dual citizens: Must present a valid Canadian passport.
- Permanent residents: Must have a valid PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).
- U.S. citizens: Exempt from eTA requirements but must carry a valid U.S. passport or identification.
- Lawful permanent residents of the U.S.: Exempt from eTA requirements but must carry proof of permanent residency and a valid passport.

Are there cases where an eTA is not required?
