Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Since September 29, 2016, foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries (such as Japan), excluding U.S. citizens, must obtain an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) when entering Canada by air. This is an electronic travel authorization required for individuals staying in Canada for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

- An eTA is valid for a maximum of five years. However, if your passport expires, the eTA will become invalid accordingly.
- The application fee is 7 CAD, and payment can be made by credit or debit card.

- Most visitors can stay in Canada for up to six months. Even if you are allowed entry, a border services officer may authorize a stay for less than or more than six months. In such cases, the date by which you must leave Canada will be indicated in your passport.
Traveler Categories and eTA Requirements
Travelers who need an eTA
Travelers from visa-exempt countries (e.g., Japan) need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. However, an eTA is not required if arriving in Canada by land (car, bus, or train) or by sea (such as a cruise ship).
Certain travelers from visa-required countries
Some travelers from visa-required countries (those who typically need a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) may be eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a TRV. This applies only to travel by air; a TRV is still required when entering by land or sea.
Travelers who do not need an eTA
- Canadian citizens or dual citizens: Must present a valid Canadian passport.
- Permanent residents: Must have a valid PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).
- U.S. citizens: Exempt from eTA requirements but must carry a valid U.S. passport or identification.
- Lawful permanent residents of the U.S.: Exempt from eTA requirements but must carry proof of permanent residency and a valid passport.

You can check your eTA status through the official Government of Canada website. Enter the information from your application to verify your current status.
Steps and Important Notes for Verification
- Select “I am a new applicant. I want to check my status.” from the “Check your status” section.
- Required Information:
- Application Number (The number starting with V, S, or W)
- Passport Number
- Email Address (The one used at the time of application)
- After verification, the system will display whether a valid eTA is on file.
If your eTA is invalid or not found
A new application is required.
