What is the Renunciation of Permanent Resident (PR) Status in Canada?
Voluntary renunciation of permanent resident (PR) status is a process where a permanent resident voluntarily relinquishes their status and no longer holds permanent resident status in Canada. This option is available to permanent residents who do not intend to reside in Canada in the future and no longer need to maintain their permanent resident status. Through this procedure, the individual relinquishes their rights and obligations as a permanent resident of Canada and choose to live outside of Canada. Alternatively, a former permanent resident who wishes to travel to Canada but cannot obtain an eTA may voluntarily return their permanent resident status.
Requirements for the renunciation of permanent resident status in Canada
- You must be a permanent resident of Canada.
- You must be a citizen or permanent resident of another country other than Canada.
- Minors under 18 years of age must have written consent from all parents or custodians.

What you need to know when renouncing permanent resident status in Canada
- Even if you apply to renounce your own permanent resident status, your family members can retain their permanent resident status as long as they do not separately apply for the renunciation. If you wish to renounce permanent resident status for all family members, you must submit an application for each one individually.
- If you apply to renounce your permanent resident status while sponsoring a family member’s permanent resident application, your family member’s application will be put on hold.
- Once your renunciation of permanent resident status is approved, you will be considered a foreigner by the Government of Canada, and you will lose the rights previously granted to you as a permanent resident. If you wish to work or study in Canada, you will need to apply for a work or study permit.
- After your renunciation is approved, you may remain in Canada on visitor status for up to six months. If you wish to stay longer, you will need to apply for an extension of your visitor status.
- If you wish to travel to Canada after renouncing your permanent resident status, you will need an eTA if you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country like Japan.
