Client K came to Canada accompanying a child who was studying at elementary school and, to pursue permanent residence, was advised to start a business in Canada, then asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle the renewal of the entrepreneur work permit. Despite the difficult situation of strict examinations at the border, the work permit was renewed in about 8 weeks.
My first-year business results were not very good, but I somehow managed to renew my permit.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
I had also asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle my first work permit, and this time it was a renewal.
Originally, I came to Canada because I wanted my child to attend school in Canada, accompanying my child as a parent while they studied at elementary school. I came to want to stay in Canada for a long time, and when I consulted Ms. Shiraishi, an immigration consultant at Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, she told me that for that, a parent would need to obtain permanent residence.
I was running a company in Japan, but it was work I could do remotely, so my income from it continued and I was not worried about money at all. However, it was suggested that I start a business in Canada for the purpose of a visa. I had already thought it might be good to add a base in Canada, so I immediately set up a company in Canada, and in the second year of my child’s studies, our whole family stayed in Canada on my entrepreneur work permit.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
Ms. Shiraishi had told me that the entrepreneur permit is initially issued for only one year, and that unless I produced results in that year, it would not lead any further. But I had income from Japan, and Canada is a wonderful place, so to be honest I slipped into a bit of a holiday mood and did not take the business very seriously. As a result, looking at the Canadian business on its own, the first year ended with a large loss.
Then the time came to renew the permit. I took the renewal lightly and assumed that of course it would be granted, so I had Ms. Shiraishi prepare the application documents and went to the border without much concern. The examination at the border took six hours, I was asked about all sorts of aspects of the business, all in English, and in the end the application was refused because the business had not been going well.
I went back to Vancouver, consulted Ms. Shiraishi, and we decided to try applying at the border once more. At that point, there were only two days left before the permit I held expired. To be as thorough as possible, I also had the lawyer who had handled setting up the company come to the border with me. But it was refused again.
So I went back to Vancouver with just one day left. That was exactly when travel restrictions began because of the COVID pandemic, and it was no longer easy even to go back to Japan. With Ms. Shiraishi telling me it was my “last chance,” I applied for a permit extension within Canada on the last day of the permit I held.
I do not know exactly what documents Ms. Shiraishi submitted at that time, but I think she made the case with various materials showing not only the results of the first year of business but also the prospects for the business to grow in the future. I also heard that she wrote in the letter that, because of COVID, our whole family wished to stay safely in Canada.
After waiting two months, when the permits for our whole family were issued, I felt that a miracle had happened. What is more, they were issued for three years.
Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada
For the next three years, although COVID is making things tough, I want to focus on the business in Canada, generate solid profits, build it into a company that can also employ Canadians, and lead this to permanent residence. Thank you so much.
