Mr. U, whose daughter was studying in Southeast Asia with her mother, planned for them to continue studying together in Canada and asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle the applications for his daughter’s study permit and his wife’s guardian stay permit (Visitor Record). With professional support easing his concerns about the procedures, the visas were obtained in about one week.
We were consulted by the father, who would not be accompanying them to Canada. Our group company, the JP Canada Study Abroad Center, handled the school procedures while we supported the visa, and the study permit was obtained without any problems in a short time.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
My daughter had been studying at an international school in Southeast Asia, with her mother living there with her. As she was moving on to a school in Canada, again accompanied by her mother, I asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to obtain a student visa (Study Permit) for my daughter and a guardian visa (Visitor Record) for her accompanying mother.
We chose Canada for our daughter’s studies because she had also attended a school in Japan based on a Canadian educational program, and because we wanted to broaden her options in case she goes on to a Canadian university in the future. I came to feel strongly that it would be better for her to start attending school in Canada at an early stage.
What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?
In our case, my daughter and wife were living in a Southeast Asian country while I was in Japan, so I had concerns about the procedures for obtaining the student visa. The support of professionals was truly reassuring, and I am glad I asked them, as I never felt any anxiety.
We asked JPCANADA, the study abroad division of the same group as Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, to handle the overall study abroad procedures, because they have an office in Victoria, where my daughter would be studying, and when I contacted them, they responded quickly and thoroughly.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
In my daughter’s case, she was starting partway through the final year of middle school, so they handled the complicated procedures of arranging her enrollment in the middle school and, at the same time, requesting admission to the high school she planned to attend after graduation.
As for the student visa, because my daughter and wife were living in a Southeast Asian country, preparing the required documents was complicated, but Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s appropriate instructions and their careful answers to our questions were very reassuring.
In particular, for the custodian declaration, both of us parents had to go to a notary office in Japan together, and the visa application required a copy of the passport showing my daughter’s and wife’s most recent entry into the Southeast Asian country where they lived. My daughter and wife were not planning to return to Japan until just before leaving for Canada, so without knowing the schedule in advance, there was a risk that the visa would not be ready before her studies began. I am grateful to Shiraishi VisaJP Canada for their appropriate guidance.
About one week after I was told that the student visa application had been submitted, I received word that it had been approved, along with the letter to be exchanged for the study permit.
At first, based on data on the Canadian immigration website, we were told it would take 7 to 8 weeks to obtain the visa, but the approval came in just one week. I believe this is because Shiraishi VisaJP Canada is experienced with visa applications and prepared complete documents and an accurate application, and I am grateful for that.
Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada
My daughter will also need to extend (renew) her student visa before she graduates from high school, so I would like to continue relying on Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, and I am glad we got to know them.
For those considering elementary, middle or high school study abroad, based on our own experience, I think it is best to start preparing, including gathering information, at least about a year in advance.
In addition, the age at which schooling starts and the time of year the school year begins differ between Japan and other countries. Even if a child transfers into the same grade as in Japan, the other children in the class may be a year younger (in British-system schools, children start the first grade of elementary school a year earlier than in Japan). Depending on the timing of the transfer, if the grade for children of the same age has already finished at the destination school but your child has not yet completed that grade in Japan, there are cases where they are only allowed to enter one grade lower. So I think it is best to check carefully when the school year starts at the destination.
Incidentally, even within the same province of BC, the grade at which Secondary School starts differs between Vancouver and Victoria.
