I panicked when I learned after getting the job that my working holiday permit did not allow child care work, but my permit was successfully amended and I am now working.

I started looking for a job as soon as I arrived in Vancouver on a working holiday. Because I had worked as a nursery teacher in Japan, and because I looked for work in August, which was perfect timing, I was hired by a daycare that wanted me to start with the new school year in September.

When I gave my employer a copy of my working holiday permit, they said, “Your permit says you are not allowed to work in child care,” and since I had not known that, I really panicked. A friend’s acquaintance then told me that if I went to the US border, they would change my permit to one that allowed me to work in child care, so I took a bus to the border. The border officers were kind, but they told me, “We can’t do anything here,” and I panicked again.
