PR Card Expired in Japan After Obtaining Permanent Residence|Client S

Date Posted:August 2, 2018

Last Updated:September 24, 2026

This is the case of Client S, who returned to Japan after seven years of living in Canada and, thinking of the child’s future, asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle a PR card renewal. With careful support that extended to obtaining a travel document for the already expired PR card, the renewal was completed in approximately 5 months.

A PR card cannot be renewed from Japan, so we had the client come to Canada temporarily.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

After holding a work permit, I became a permanent resident and lived in Calgary for three and a half years, then moved to Toronto and lived there for another three and a half years. I brought my seven years of life in Canada to a close in April 2017.

This time, Shiraishi VisaJP Canada helped me renew my PR card from Japan.

I had returned to Japan intending not to renew my PR card (in other words, not to maintain my permanent residence), but I decided to renew it after all for the future of my son, who is now in high school. He came to love English during his elementary school years in Calgary and told me that he wants a job involving English in the future. As a parent, I wanted to give him the chance to experience life in Canada again, and that is what led me to renew my PR card.

What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?

My PR card was about to expire and I had already come back to Japan, so I wondered what to do and consulted Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, who had helped me with my work permit before.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

From answering my questions and giving advice to handling the PR card renewal and the travel document application, they were always kind and careful. The document preparation was quick and very smooth.

In my case, the PR card was not mailed to me, and in the end I had to pick it up in person at the immigration office. By the time the notice to appear arrived, my PR card had already expired, so I hurriedly applied for and obtained a travel document in Japan, then went to Canada and appeared at the immigration office. There was only one month for all of this, but because Shiraishi VisaJP Canada quickly helped me apply for the travel document, I was able to get it in time for my appointment.

I was very worried about what I would be asked at the appointment, but everything went fine, and I received my new card at the immigration office.

Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada

If anyone reading this has worries about going to Canada, or is struggling in a situation similar to mine, I personally think it would be worth consulting Shiraishi VisaJP Canada once. Everyone’s direction and approach are different, but a consultation might open up a path for you.

My next goal is to sponsor my son, who returned to Japan without ever really being able to live as a permanent resident because of family circumstances (he has already lost his permanent residence), so that he can come back to Canada as a permanent resident and we can live together again. I expect my life will continue to have its own hardships and difficulties, but it is the one and only life I have been given. So that I have no regrets, I intend to keep moving straight ahead toward the goals I have set for myself, without giving up.
