A Chinese National Living in Japan: A Study Permit for an Exchange Programme at a University in Alberta|Ms. W

Ms. W is a Chinese national with permanent residence in Japan. She made her childhood dream of studying in Canada come true as an exchange student. Because the process required sending her passport to Manila to have a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) affixed, it was more complex and longer than for a Japanese national, so thorough preparation was essential. With Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s support, she obtained her study permit on schedule and began her studies.
There were a lot of required documents, but having each one explained carefully, including how to obtain it, was a great help.

Key Points from the Consultant
Ms. W was going to attend a university in Alberta as an exchange student from the Japanese university she currently attends, and asked us to file on her behalf.
The final step of the process required sending her original passport to the Canadian immigration authority to have the visa affixed and returned, so the review had to be finished well before her departure. Biometrics also had to be given at a visa application centre, and those are only in Tokyo and Osaka — far from where she was living — so we had to file quickly enough that she could give them while visiting her family home, which was closer.
As average processing times kept lengthening, we made enquiries twice and both times the average had stretched further still, with the reply that the case was still within the average processing time. In the end they did act and the passport made it in time, which was a real relief!
We hope she thoroughly enjoys the study abroad experience in Canada she has dreamed of since childhood.

What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?
Because of my background — living in Japan as a Chinese national — I wanted to ask a professional with specialist knowledge, so I went to Shiraishi VisaJP Canada.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
There were a lot of required documents and it was hard work, but having each one explained carefully, including how to obtain it, was a great help. I also remember that when the review dragged on they sent follow-up emails to the immigration authority, and that they replied to urgent emails even outside working hours. Being supported to the very end with everything they could do was genuinely reassuring.

It was wonderful.
