Why Did You Pursue Canadian Permanent Residence?
Because I wanted to build my life in Canada.
I wanted to continue the life I have now, and I couldn’t picture concretely what my life would be like after going back to Japan.
Q. Specifically, what do you like about your current life?
Maybe it’s just my current workplace, but I can express my individuality.
When I suggest something I want to do, they let me try it. I get praised a lot. Sometimes I wonder, ‘Is it okay to be this free?’, but it’s so different from my experience in Japan that I wanted to see myself go even further.
What Was the Process Toward Permanent Residence?
I first came on a working holiday, then asked Jinzai Canada for support with my work permit application and got a 2-year visa as a Baker. After working for 1 year on the work permit, I applied for permanent residence right away.
What Stands Out Most in Your Journey to Permanent Residence?
Six months into my working holiday, I really wanted to stay here. I didn’t want to go back to Japan like this. I went to Jinzai Canada to hear what they had to say and was told there were various requirements for applying.
One of them was full-time employment. At the time I was working 4 days a week, but the very next day my employer offered me full-time work, and I thought it was fate (laughs).
My parents let me do what I wanted, so I had no hesitation about the path to immigration, but I always miss Japan. There are times I wonder whether this path was really the right one.

What Was the Hardest Part of the Process?
Getting the work permit!! The most stressful part was until the LMO came through; I was so anxious, not knowing whether I could stay or would have to go home.
Jinzai Canada had sent all the explanatory documents to my employer, but I remember talking with my employer very nervously and very seriously to double-check things myself, looking up words in the dictionary and taking notes.
What Are Your Goals in Canada?
I plan to work hard in this occupation for the rest of my life, so I want to study, earn qualifications and make use of them in the future.
I want to keep taking on various challenges and continue refining my skills.
About My Current Job
Since I was little, I’ve loved making cakes and drawing.
In Japan I had a cook’s licence (調理師免許), but I never worked with cakes, yet for some reason I really wanted to work at a bakery. When I brought my resume to Breka, I just wanted a job so badly that any position was fine, front or kitchen.
At the interview that followed, I brought homemade cookies. That’s what led to me working in the kitchen.
A Message for Those Aiming to Settle in Canada
I think there are many ways to apply for immigration, and it will be a long process.
Which method suits you, and whether you can wait without anxiety while applying: I think asking professionals gives you a completely different sense of security! Good luck!
