What Is the Embassy of Japan in Canada?
The history of the Embassy of Japan in Canada (在カナダ日本国大使館) is closely tied to the history of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada. Diplomatic relations between the two countries began in 1928. That year, Japan opened a consulate in Ottawa, and on May 21, 1929, Canada opened a diplomatic mission in Tokyo, establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
What the Embassy of Japan in Canada Can Do
Passport Renewal and Management
You need a valid passport when moving to Canada. The embassy renews passports and issues new ones when necessary.
Visa Application Support
A long-term stay in Canada requires the appropriate visa. The embassy can provide general information on visa applications and advise on the necessary procedures, but visa applications themselves are handled by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Submitting Overseas Residential Registration
Japanese nationals staying in Canada long term should submit an Overseas Residential Registration (在留届) to the embassy for their safety and so they can be contacted in an emergency. You can submit it at this link: Online Overseas Residential Registration (ORRnet) (Japanese)
Emergency Assistance
If you face an emergency in Canada (illness, an accident, becoming a victim of crime, etc.), the embassy serves as an emergency contact and provides assistance as needed.
