Why did you decide to pursue permanent residence in Canada?
Before coming to Canada, I lived in Australia. Shortly before my visa expired, I was thinking about what to do next. Working as a hair stylist in Japan was an option, but my desire to take on more challenges abroad was stronger. Assuming I would get a work permit and eventually permanent residence, I researched which country would let me use my skills and make permanent residence easier to obtain, and Canada looked the most promising, so I chose Canada. At first, on a working holiday, I struggled to adjust to the new environment in many ways, but gradually I came to see the good things about Canada, my wish to live here grew stronger, and I began seriously considering the path to permanent residence.
What specific steps did you go through to get permanent residence?
To get permanent residence, I first had to find a salon that would support a work permit. Luckily, soon after arriving in Vancouver, a friend introduced me to the salon where I work now, and they agreed to support my work permit as well. Just as I was about to start my permanent residence application, the CEC eligibility criteria changed significantly in a way that worked in my favour, so everything went smoothly all the way to permanent residence, which surprised even me.
What was the hardest or most memorable part of the permanent residence application process?
After I came to Canada, the visa rules kept changing and getting permanent residence became harder. When I learned in January this year that IRCC would announce major changes to permanent residence applications, I was secretly nervous, thinking, “What if these changes ruin my application?” But in my case, it meant I could get it even faster than before, so I was lucky. It was approved just six months after I actually started the application.
Also, I’m a very anxious person by nature, so asking a professional took a weight off my mind. Between applying and getting my PR, I saw immigration law change very quickly and situations change suddenly, and when I saw on Facebook how well they kept on top of it all, I was convinced I could never have applied on my own.
