Super Visa

Last Updated:March 4, 2025

What is a Super Visa?

A Super Visa allows you to visit your children or grandchildren in Canada for up to five years with a single application. This visa is renewable and allows for multiple entries for a total of up to 10 years. To obtain a Super Visa, you must meet certain requirements, including health insurance coverage. For nationals of visa exempt countries, it is recommended that they enter Canada initially on visitor status and then extend their stay in the country for up to two years.

Recommended use of a Super Visa for Japanese nationals

  • Japanese nationals and other visa-exempt citizens may first enter Canada on visitor status and stay for up to 6 months, making the first visit to Canada easier.
  • Within six months of arriving in Canada, you can apply to extend your stay in the country.
  • If you use a Super Visa to extend your stay, you can extend your stay for up to two years with a single application. This makes it easier to stay in Canada for longer periods of time and eliminates the need for frequent visa renewals.
  • If you wish to stay longer, you can also apply for a Super Visa extension.

Application requirements for a Super Visa

  • You must be able to prove that you are the parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • You must pass a satisfactory immigration medical exam as specified by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  • You must have medical insurance coverage with a private Canadian or foreign insurance company for at least one year, with coverage of at least $100,000.
  • You must provide a letter of financial support from the Canadian citizen or permanent resident sponsoring you, along with proof of their income meeting the required minimum level.

※We recommend Bridges Int’l Insurance Services, which is available from Japan with Japanese language support, as a domestic Canadian insurance option.

Application process for a Super Visa (if applying from outside Canada)

01Submit your application online

Apply through your online account. You must be outside of Canada at the time of application.

02Pay the application fee

Pay the $100 application fee online.

03Register biometrics (fingerprint)

An $85 biometric fee is required. Biometric registration can be done at a location designated by Service Canada if you are in Canada. If you are in Japan, you must register at a Visa Application Centre. Biometric registration is available at designated locations in Tokyo or Osaka. For more information, please refer to this link: Visa Application Centres

04Review by IRCC

IRCC will review your application based on the updated documents. After the review is completed, your passport will be mailed to the Embassy of Canada in Manila via the Visa Application Centre. The Embassy of Canada will affix the visa to the passport and return it to you.

05Enter Canada

When you enter Canada with a passport that has a visa attached, a 5-year visitor record will be issued at the immigration office at the airport of entry. You may enter and leave Canada as many times as you like while your visitor record is valid. If you receive a letter of refusal, you may still stay in Canada as a regular visitor (tourist) for up to 6 months.

*You can also enter Canada on visitor status without a visa and apply within Canada.
