After a working holiday, a Co-op visa and a work permit, Client S aimed for permanent residence and asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle an inland Family Class application. With flexible advice to register for Express Entry in parallel, the client obtained permanent residence in about 7 months.

My immigration application was thrown around by COVID-19, but with Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s support, I obtained permanent residence.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

After a one-year working holiday, I wanted to improve my English further, so I looked for a way to stay longer and aimed for permanent residence by way of a Co-op visa and a work permit.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

Once my partner and I had lived together for one year, I applied for permanent residence through the Family Class. However, because Family Class processing was taking a long time during the COVID-19 pandemic, I had not given up on applying for permanent residence based on my work experience either.

The hardest part was studying English. I had long been aiming to apply through Express Entry, but before COVID-19 the score needed to receive an ITA stayed high, and in my case, the only way to raise my score was to improve my English test results.

However, since it is a language, studying doesn’t make you improve right away. I had to keep learning steadily over the long term to build my English skills, and looking back, that was the hard part.

After COVID-19 began, the score needed to receive an ITA dropped considerably, and processing times became shorter and then longer. To be honest, I had various feelings about the Canadian immigration authorities, but while staying in constant contact with my immigration consultant, we decided, “Let’s try registering for Express Entry after all!” So I left the Family Class application as it was and also registered for Express Entry.

And then, to my surprise, I received an ITA right away.

Since I didn’t know how long the Family Class processing would take, I used this ITA to proceed with a Canadian Experience Class application at the same time.

In the end, the Family Class processing finished first, and I have now successfully obtained permanent residence through the Family Class.

Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada

Looking back on applying for permanent residence, what I wish I had done is to prepare everything early. Not only studying English, but also getting documents sent from Japan takes more time and effort than you think, so I believe the shortcut to permanent residence is to make your own plan in advance and prepare accordingly!

You can’t change the speed of the immigration authorities or the mail, but there are many things you can do before then, such as preparing what you need for permanent residence, studying English and gathering documents, so I did everything I could, in my own way, to the best of my ability!
