Obtaining Permanent Residence Under the Family Class as a Common-Law Partner|Ms. T

Ms. T, who was staying in Canada on a study permit for language school, thought about her future with her partner and asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle her Family Class (common-law) permanent residence application. After a process of about two years that began with collecting records of their cohabitation, she obtained permanent residence after an 8-month review.
“Common-law partner” is an unfamiliar concept in Japan, but in Canada common-law partners are given almost the same rights as married couples and can apply for permanent residence if they meet the requirements. The client consulted us from the preparation stage and obtained permanent residence smoothly.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
I was originally staying in Vancouver to attend a language school to learn English. However, staying only on a study permit did not allow me to plan a future with my partner, and as an international student I would have had to keep paying very high tuition, which is very inefficient for studying over the long term. Thinking about my own future and my future with my partner, I decided to apply for permanent residence as a common-law partner.
What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?
I already knew from the staff at the study abroad centre I was using that there are services in Canada that handle visa and permanent residence applications and procedures. In my case, I had plenty of time left on my study permit and my personal history and status were not particularly complicated, so I thought I could manage the permanent residence application myself if I worked on it steadily. However, my partner pointed out the effort involved and the time that could be lost through mistakes in the documents, and encouraged me, saying that having a professional handle the application and getting permanent residence as soon as possible would benefit us more in the long run. That is what made me decide to ask them to handle the application.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
Unlike marriage, a common-law application is based on one year of living together, so it starts with steadily collecting the record of the two of you living together. Then you have to wait for a review period of up to one year after applying, so for me it became a major life project of about two years, and the hope and anxiety while waiting were the biggest things for me. But I keenly felt how grateful I was for my partner’s support as my sponsor. I am thankful to my partner, who supported this big, life-changing decision of mine by staking his own life on it together with me!
How was your experience using Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s services?
Also, from 2017 the immigration authorities’ system for common-law applications changed somewhat from previous years, and with no precedents under the new system, they made predictions based on their past experience and records and responded flexibly, which was a great help. During the application, there were several requests for additional documents and inquiries from the immigration authorities, and they responded quickly every time, which was great. I think responding quickly yourself is also very important.
Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada
Now that I have permanent residence, I plan to study hard so that I can learn a skilled trade at a public school. After focusing on my studies, I want to work hard to make a living in Vancouver with dressmaking skills. I will do my best to get a solid job so that my sponsor and I can enjoy life in Canada even more.
