Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

My path to permanent residence began in April 2009, when I came to Canada on a Study Permit aiming to obtain a nursing licence. My naive expectation that I could get the licence after about a year of hard work was dashed, and I did not obtain it until July 2011.

Even after getting my licence, I had no job. I learned that having permanent residence makes a huge difference when looking for work, so I decided to try to obtain it. Shiraishi VisaJP Canada had helped me when I reapplied for my Study Permit during my studies and when I applied for my Working Holiday visa. How was your experience using Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s services?

The consultant was even more careful and efficient, and I strongly felt her professionalism. As many people who come to Canada probably feel, there are a lot of careless, sloppy services here. Japanese people are no exception: among the Japanese people offering services in Canada, there are some who do unbelievably terrible things. However, the way Ms. Yamashita worked was something you rarely come across in Canada; it felt like a miracle. I felt this at our very first meeting, and I kept feeling it throughout the application period. Without exaggeration, I believe I could not have obtained permanent residence without Ms. Yamashita.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

Even so, the road to permanent residence was not smooth. Immigration was getting stricter every year: I applied in the first year (2011), but the application hit the cap and I had to give up. I planned to try again the following year, but that year the nursing occupation was removed from the Skilled Worker program, and with no job offer, it became impossible for me to apply. I gave up, and in October 2011, with my visa expired and my savings gone, I returned to Japan temporarily. After returning, I stopped limiting my job search to Vancouver, BC. A recruitment agency told me that the ICU of a hospital in a small town in Saskatchewan was looking for nurses and would support a visa, and asked whether I wanted to go. I answered “Yes” immediately, and I got the job through a phone interview. Shiraishi VisaJP Canada also helped me with my work permit application. In September 2012, I obtained a three-year Work Permit and started working as a nurse in Canada. As soon as my job was settled, I submitted my immigration application at the end of October 2012, and in March 2014 I obtained permanent residence. I was so happy I could have cried. Until then, when looking for work, I had to limit my search to employers that would support a work permit, but obtaining permanent residence opened the doors much wider. I truly feel free and independent.

Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada

To those considering immigrating to Canada: Canada is said to be open to immigrants, and it truly is generous toward them. I have hardly ever felt discriminated against. Even so, obtaining permanent residence is hard. I think you are expected not only to seek what you can gain from Canada, but to try to become someone who is useful to Canada. That may sound presumptuous, but I myself am still constantly being helped by the people of Canada, and I am still learning so that I can soon become someone who contributes. Canada is a wonderful country. It would be great if people from all kinds of backgrounds could come together and make it an even better one.
