Responding to Canada’s Study Permit Changes: Quickly Obtaining a Study Permit and a Spousal Open Work Permit for Her Husband|Mr. and Ms. Y
Date Posted:July 28, 2024
Last Updated:September 24, 2026
This is the case of Mr. and Ms. Y, who asked Shiraishi VisaJP Canada to handle a study permit application for Ms. Y, who had decided to go to college, and a Spousal Open Work Permit application for her husband. Despite a tight schedule following the Canadian immigration authority’s sudden announcement of a policy change, both visas were obtained in 5 months and 21 days.
She called the immigration office every week and pressed them on our behalf. I am sincerely grateful.

Key Points from the Consultant
This was an urgent application so that the couple could get in just before the study permit rule change, and because one of the applicants was applying without the status of having a Spousal Open Work Permit restoration application in progress, the review took more than three times the average processing time.
After we followed up with the immigration authority almost every week, the visas were finally issued, and we are glad they were in time for the start of school and the move to another province. I believe persistence and tenacity were the keys to success.
We are also very grateful to the applicants for waiting so patiently.

Client Comments
Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
At first I intended to return to Japan, but after studying at a language school and living here on a working holiday, I came to love life in Canada and decided to go on to college in Canada. That decision was also made with permanent residence in mind.
What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?
Some time earlier, when I was looking for a consultant for a paid consultation about permanent residence, I consulted Ms. Shiraishi of Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, based on three points: “having an office in Canada,” “active posting on YouTube and Instagram,” and “a comprehensive website.”
Time passed, and when I decided to go to college, we needed to apply for a study permit and the spousal open work permit that comes with it. I judged that I could not do it myself, so I decided to ask Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, whom I had already consulted about permanent residence. Their email replies had been quick during the permanent residence consultation too, so I expected they would handle the visa applications smoothly.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
The Canadian government’s sudden change in visa policy, and the review taking more than six months.
Since my college started in September 2024, I thought it would be fine to apply for my study permit and my husband’s Spousal Open Work Permit around April 2024.
However, in January, the Canadian government announced that “within a few weeks, it will stop accepting Spousal Open Work Permit applications tied to study permits (for college students),” and we found ourselves in a situation where we might become ineligible unless we applied right away. Even after applying urgently, no approval came for more than six months and I had half given up, but the approval finally came two weeks before the tuition payment deadline.
How was your experience using Shiraishi VisaJP Canada’s services?
After the Canadian government announced the policy change, we immediately signed the application representation contract and the urgent handling contract. They sent us the document instructions that same day and completed the application two days later. I am truly grateful for how quickly they acted.
Also, the review after the application took more than six months and I was very anxious, but despite being busy, Ms. Gould, who handled our case, called the immigration office every week and pressed them on our behalf. As a result, the approval came in time, and I was able to start college in September.
Throughout the application, even with so many clients to look after, she replied to my emails quickly. That was a real emotional support while I was feeling anxious.
I am sincerely grateful.
