New Brunswick to Nominate 4,250 Permanent Residents in 2025 — 1,500 More than Initially Planned

Last Updated:June 26, 2025

The Government of New Brunswick has successfully negotiated a significant increase in its immigration allocation for 2025 with the federal government. The province will now be able to nominate up to 4,250 applicants for permanent residency this year, an increase of 1,500 compared to the previous number announced in February. All additional spots will be allocated to the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

Labour Shortages in Key Sectors

New Brunswick continues to face labour shortages, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and the skilled trades. The government has stated it will continue to focus its nominations in these areas, though some occupations will remain restricted. Prospective applicants are encouraged to stay up to date on program notices and eligibility changes.

Comment from Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours

“Newcomers are crucial to meeting our province’s workforce needs,” said Jean-Claude D’Amours, Acting Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, and Minister responsible for Immigration. “We are grateful for the federal government’s willingness to respond to our needs and provide flexibility.”

Commitment to Welcome Asylum Claimants

As part of the agreement, New Brunswick has also committed to welcoming up to 400 asylum claimants over the next two years, provided they consent to relocation to the province. The Government of Canada will provide over $14.1 million in funding through the Interim Housing Assistance Program to support temporary housing and settlement services for these individuals.

Federal Minister’s Remarks

Federal Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing labour gaps: “We’re proud to support New Brunswick in welcoming newcomers who will help build communities and strengthen the economy.”

Support from Business and Community

Local economic and business leaders also welcomed the announcement. Jonathan Duffaud, CEO of the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick, expressed readiness to work with settlement agencies and employers to help newcomers integrate quickly. Monica Gaudet-Justason, President and CEO of the New Brunswick Business Council, echoed the need for skilled labour “regardless of whether they are asylum claimants or other newcomers.”

Small Business Needs

Louis-Philippe Gauthier, Vice-President for Atlantic Canada at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, added: “With over 50% of small business owners citing labour shortages as their top concern, every opportunity must be taken to connect skilled workers with jobs.”

Broader Organizational Support

Employers such as J.D. Irving, Ltd., along with organizations like the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Multicultural Council, also expressed support for the initiative.

Next Steps: Relocation and Settlement

In the coming weeks, provincial officials will begin engaging with asylum claimants already in Canada who have expressed interest in relocating to New Brunswick. Those who move will receive help from local settlement agencies with housing, employment services, and the transition to independent living.

Final Word from Minister D’Amours

Minister D’Amours noted that many of these individuals are ready to contribute to the province’s economy, and the government will work closely with employers to identify job opportunities that match their skills.
