In July 2025, the Government of Nova Scotia released an important update regarding its immigration programs. Due to a higher number of applications than the province’s allocation for 2025, the government has implemented new prioritization criteria for the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (PNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).
This article outlines the key areas of priority, what to expect in the coming months, and important considerations for current and future applicants.
Who Gets Priority in 2025
The following applicants will be prioritized under the PNP and AIP:
- People already living and working in Nova Scotia with work permits expiring in 2025.
Among these applicants, those working in the following sectors will receive additional priority:
- Healthcare and Social Assistance (NAICS 62)
- Construction (NAICS 23)
Other factors that will be considered during the assessment process include:
- Regional needs across the province
- People who are likely to stay long term in Nova Scotia
Applicants from Outside Canada
For applicants currently residing outside of Canada, priority will be given to those with work experience in:
- Healthcare and Social Assistance (NAICS 62)
- Construction (NAICS 23)
Currently, applications from other sectors are generally not being considered. However, exceptions may be made under AIP if an employer in Nova Scotia is actively recruiting for positions in the following sectors:
- Trucking
- Science and technology
- Clean energy sectors
- Resource Development
Looking Ahead to 2026
For 2026, the province has announced that individuals working in healthcare, social assistance, and construction whose work permits will expire in 2026 will be prioritized. Further details regarding additional priority groups will be announced once the federal government confirms Nova Scotia’s immigration allocation for 2026.
Important Notes for Current and Prospective Applicants
If you are currently applying through PNP or AIP—or are considering doing so—please keep the following in mind:
- Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee that your application will be processed
- Even if your application is reviewed, it may not be approved
- You must maintain valid immigration status in Canada while your application is in process
- Any changes to your legal status or employment must be reported to the appropriate authorities
Planning Your Application
If you’re thinking of applying under PNP or AIP, it is crucial to review the latest prioritization guidelines and, if possible, seek employment in a priority sector or maintain your current employment in Nova Scotia.
