Last Updated:March 4, 2025

What is the Nova Scotia Nominee Program?

The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) provides a pathway to permanent residence for a diverse range of newcomers. Whether you are an international student, a foreign worker already in Nova Scotia, or a skilled worker or entrepreneur from abroad, the NSNP offers the opportunity to make Canada your home through this provincial nominee program.

List of Nova Scotia Nominee Programs (NSNP) Streams

Express Entry

Employers seeking to fill positions classified under skill levels 0, 1, 2, or 3 are eligible to apply through the Express Entry system.

The skill levels are defined in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) as outlined below.

Skill level 0 Executives, Company Directors, and Managers
Skill level 1 Specialized professions that generally require a university or graduate degree.
Skill level 2 Skilled trades and mid-level management roles that generally require a college diploma or over two years of apprenticeship training
Skill level 3 Intermediate technical roles typically requiring a college degree, less than two years of apprenticeship training, or over six months of on-the-job experience

Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities

This enables provinces to designate specific occupations as eligible for immigration.

Skilled Worker Stream

This stream is designed for foreign workers and international graduates. Employers who cannot fill a position with Canadian citizens or permanent residents may apply through this stream after conducting a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Occupation In-Demand Stream

This stream focuses on intermediate-skilled occupations that are in high demand within the province. Eligible occupations may change based on labour market needs. It primarily targets occupations in skill levels (TEER) 3, 4, and 5, as defined in National Occupational Classification (NOC).

International Graduates In-Demand Stream

This stream is designed for international graduates who hold a permanent job offer under one of two specific NOC codes.

Entrepreneur Stream

This stream is designed for candidates with experience in business ownership or senior management. Applicants must reside in Nova Scotia, either launch a new business or acquire an existing one, and actively engage in its daily operations.

International Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

This stream is designed for recent graduates of a university or community college in Nova Scotia. They must start or acquire a business in the province and operate it for one year under a post-graduation work permit.

Physician Stream

This stream supports the recruitment of general practitioners, family physicians, and specialists within the province’s public healthcare system. It is designed to help the province hire and retain doctors when Canadian citizens or permanent residents are unavailable to fill the positions.

Characteristics of Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a stunning region on the eastern coast of Canada, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. With its maritime climate, it boasts mild summers and cold winters, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking along breathtaking coastlines or enjoying a day at the beach. The province’s population is predominantly English-speaking, with 95% using English as their mother tongue, offering a seamless English-speaking environment.

Top attractions include the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lunenburg, the historic Fisherman’s Cove with its picturesque painted houses, and the iconic Peggy’s Cove, famous for its lighthouse. The province offers a rich tapestry of colourful streets, charming lighthouses, picturesque wineries, and peaceful farms. A drive along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island is a must, as is immersing yourself in the Celtic culture of Halifax. The Bay of Fundy, known for having the world’s highest tides, offers unique opportunities for kayaking and whale watching.

Nova Scotia’s deep Scottish roots are reflected in its vibrant culture, and Halifax is a haven for seafood lovers, where you can enjoy the freshest catches. For history enthusiasts, a visit to the Halifax Citadel or the Fortress of Louisbourg is highly recommended, allowing you to step back in time and experience the province’s rich past.
