My professional skills, built on my education and work experience in Japan, were valued in Canada too, and I was able to become a permanent resident!

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

My motivation for applying for permanent residence was that professionals have a higher status in Canada than in Japan. In Japan, working more than 12 hours a day was normal, there was no overtime pay, and when calculated by the hour, my pay came to around 700 yen.

But since coming to Canada to work, my working day ends after 8 hours, and I was paid the amount I had asked for, so I am very satisfied.

I have heard that hairdressers, mechanics, cooks and others are also treated better here than in Japan, and I was moved by the respect shown to skilled professions.

What made you choose Shiraishi VisaJP Canada?

When I decided to apply for permanent residence, I first looked for Japanese-speaking agents and visited several. However, in some cases a Japanese interpreter relayed the conversation, and in others the staff spoke Japanese but with slightly different intonation. This was very stressful, so I decided to find an agent who was Japanese and spoke Japanese.

Then, when I applied for my work permit through Shiraishi VisaJP Canada, they explained everything carefully, the staff were kind and acted quickly, and I felt reassured, so I decided to ask them to handle everything from obtaining and renewing my work permit to my permanent residence application.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

At first I was considering Express Entry, but it was difficult. Until then, immigrating had never felt realistic to me at all, so I was overjoyed that a chance had finally come my way too.

Living in a foreign country like Canada can be hard, but I think that having confidence in yourself makes the option of “giving up and going back to Japan” feel more distant.

As a professional, I resolved to make full use of everything I had learned and developed in Japan, and that allowed me to take on the challenge of obtaining a work permit and applying for permanent residence.

If you cannot feel confident in yourself, I think you can build confidence by taking action, for example by going to school and increasing your skills through qualifications or training.
