Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
I came to Vancouver on a study permit in the winter of 2014. In Japan I had worked in elderly care, and I came to Canada wanting to do the same kind of care work here. First I attended ESL for about three months, and then I was able to enrol in a college where I could obtain a care aide qualification. At that time permanent residence was not on my mind at all; getting into college took everything I had, and I vaguely thought I would somehow be able to work after graduating (which was quite a naive way of thinking). Meanwhile, I began to feel that I had stayed in Canada for quite a long time, and when I learned that permanent residence is essential to be able to choose your job freely, I started to think seriously about obtaining it.
What was the most memorable part of the process?
After graduating from college, every day was very stressful while I was looking for a live-in caregiver employer. In Japan, finding care work is easy. There is plenty of demand; you send your résumé, have an interview and can start working the next day. In Canada, there is also plenty of demand, but you cannot get a job easily, because you need a work permit. For that, you first need an LMIA with the employer’s cooperation (note: this was under the old application rules, which differ from the current ones). I sent more than 100 résumés and was able to interview with a few employers, but most of them turned me down because hiring a foreign worker is complicated and takes time. It was frustrating, but I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful employer who agreed to become my sponsor. Even while my employer was going through the LMIA process, I was anxious about whether it would really work out, but I obtained my work permit and in the summer of 2016 I moved to Belmont, BC, where my employer lived. It was very hard to leave Vancouver just as I was finally getting used to living there, but thanks to my wonderful employer’s family, I enjoyed life in Belmont well enough.
However, in the autumn of 2017, my client passed away. It was about a year after my work permit had been issued. To apply for permanent residence as a caregiver, you needed two years of work within four years. I had believed that I would work in Belmont for two years and obtain permanent residence smoothly, so it was a shock. I then went back to Vancouver and started looking for a new employer. Soon afterwards, the family of a close friend of my late employer, who lived in Edmonton, reached out to me and quickly agreed to become my sponsor. They started the procedures right away, and in the winter of 2018 I moved to Edmonton and started working.
When I moved, the person I was to care for was in hospital, and the doctors were even talking about moving them to a hospice. I spent a while anxious every day, wondering whether I was going to lose my job again after coming all the way to Edmonton. Fortunately, they were discharged and stayed healthy for more than a year after that, and in the winter of 2019 I successfully completed my two years of work.
Right after that I applied for permanent residence, and although it took longer than average to get to the interview, I recently obtained permanent residence successfully.
