Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
I had done working holidays in New Zealand and Australia, and I had always wanted to come to Canada one day. The pandemic limited how freely I could move around, and with the age limit in mind I felt this was my last chance, so I obtained a working holiday visa and took the plunge to move to Canada.

What was the most memorable part of the process?
We began the LMIA application in July 2024 so that I could get an LMIA work permit, but before the result came through my work permit was refused once and I had to return to Japan. I became very anxious that the application might not go through at all.

Getting a visa has become harder in recent years and the cost of living is high, but I think you can have many experiences here that you could never have in Japan.

In 2024 the LMIA rules changed several times and reviews at Service Canada took a long time. Because Ms. Y’s LMIA application had been filed before the rule changes, it was assessed under the earlier conditions. As a result she was able to obtain a two-year permit, where the current rules would have given only one year.
The wait must have been worrying, but she responded to our progress reports calmly and positively throughout, and we are very grateful for that. When the LMIA was approved and she could travel, we were delighted too. After such a long wait, we hope she thoroughly enjoys her life in Canada.
