Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

When I came to Canada on a working holiday, I planned to go home after it ended, but after six months I had fallen in love with Vancouver and no longer wanted to return to Japan.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

In Japan I had worked at a bakery, and I had never particularly mentioned it because I did not think it was much of a career, so I was surprised when immigration consultant Ms. Shiraishi said this experience could be used.

At the grocery store, I worked as a kitchen helper making prepared foods, but Ms. Shiraishi advised me to talk to the company about moving to the role of making bread and sweets, so I did. In the end, the company gave me a position mainly as a Baker, with a little regular Cook work as well.

I safely obtained a two-year work permit, began to want to stay in Canada longer, and started aiming for permanent residence. My English test score did not rise as I had hoped, and I could not apply for permanent residence during those two years, so I got another work permit, and only after I had worked more than three years in total, counting from my working holiday, did I finally get a sufficient English score and apply for permanent residence. The permanent residence application also required the company’s support, so Ms. Shiraishi explained it to my manager again. The manager had changed since my work permit, so it was like explaining everything from scratch, but she spoke in a way that my manager could fully understand, which was great.

Future outlook and a message for those planning to travel to Canada

I was so happy when I got permanent residence. Baker work starts early, and for these five years my life was getting up at 3 a.m., leaving at 4 and starting work at 5. It was nice that work ended early in the afternoon so I could relax, but I could hardly go out at night, and in summer I had to go to bed while it was still light, so from now on I want to switch to a job with normal hours and enjoy Vancouver at night too (laughs).
