Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

I originally worked in the same industry in Japan, but I chose Canada, a country of immigrants, because I wanted to work somewhere cutting-edge information is exchanged, where Hollywood film work has been booming for several years thanks to tax incentives, and because I wanted to broaden my career further. Talking with people from all over the world lets me learn what kind of talent is in demand now and where my skills will be needed in the future. Another big reason is that I have been interested in Western culture since I was young, influenced by my mother.

By nature, I prefer to settle in one place and work steadily, so the problem was how to stay in Canada for the long term. At the time, I heard that assessments for work permits had become even stricter because of a rule change, so I decided to obtain permanent residence.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

The hardest part of the journey to permanent residence was that Canada’s immigration rules changed so often. Until a few years earlier, there had been a category in which simply holding an LMIA gave you an advantage in an immigration application, but a rule revision by the immigration authorities changed that, and I no longer had enough points. In the end, I had to change course and apply under a category called BCPNP, with the support of my company. Even when you have been preparing for a long time, sudden changes like that can happen, so from then on I checked immigration news every day, and the worry never stopped.
