Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

In Japan, I had worked for many years as a soba noodle chef. I vaguely wanted to work abroad, so I started job hunting, and as luck would have it, I landed a job in Canada. My first contact with Shiraishi VisaJP Canada was when my employer introduced them to me for my work permit application.

I was already married in Japan, but I wanted to check out Canada on my own first, so I got a visa by myself and went to Canada alone. After living here, I found Canada to be a very good place and thought I could bring my family over, so I talked it over with my wife and brought my family to Canada.

My wife had been married before in Japan and had children from her previous marriages. Counting my own family as well, there were five of us in all, and I brought everyone over, determined to take care of them all in Canada.

Before the immigration application, the first challenge was for the whole family to adjust to life in Canada. No one but me could speak English, and my own English was only so-so, but the whole family relied on me alone, so I did my best, taking on work, daily life and caring for the family. After a while, though, the children got used to life in Canada, before I knew it their English was better than mine, and they seemed more relaxed and free than they had been in Japan.

What was the most memorable part of the process?

The immigration application was tough. Perhaps because of my wife’s previous marriages, we were asked for a great many additional documents. Some requests even required getting documents from her former husband, which I was very reluctant about, but we had no choice, so we did everything we could. It was my first marriage, but because of my wife’s marital history, our marriage may have been suspected of not being genuine.
